Youth Culture festival
|
On Saturday, July 10 the Institute of Bermuda Architects hosted a stall at the Department of Community & Cultural Affairs first Youth Culture Festival. The festival’s theme of Urban Playground featured high-energy BMX shows, skateboarders and Parkour artists and had various informational stalls and workshops. We were in good company at the Festival, sharing tent space with Duke of Edinburgh and the Bermuda Film Festival, among others, and provided Bermuda’s future architects (and sometimes their parents!) with a fun and creative challenge of creating the tallest play dough/popsicle stick structure. Some masterpieces stood tall and others fell on the windy rooftop of Bull’s Head but there was no shortage of creativity and ingenuity at the First Youth Festival.

IBA SEASCAPE 2nd Annual Design Competition
|
On Friday, July 16, 2010, the Institute of Bermuda Architects held a reception for the 2nd Annual Design Competition at the Botanical Gardens Visitor’s Center. A collaboration between the IBA, the Ministry of Works & Engineering and the Ministry of Environment and Sports, the theme of the competition was ‘Seascape: Adaptable Lifeguard Tower.’ Given two weeks and a location at John Smith’s Bay Beach, students and professionals alike took on the challenge of creating an innovative and achievable tower to meet the specific needs of our local lifeguards. The 9 entries were well received by 5 judges, who consisted of architects, interior designers and representatives from Works & Engineering and Parks Department. The reception was well attended and all who came were impressed with the quality of work produced by all participants over such a short time frame. Ari Ming, IBA President, Nathan Trott, Lifeguard Superintendent, and Jameka Kelly, Acting Park Planner, then announced the winners for each category. Tika Gilbert (Kingston University, UK) took home 2nd Place in the Student Category while Jonathan Mirasol (Botelho Wood Architects) was awarded 2nd Place in the Professional Category, Krystal Rodrigues (Wentworth Institute of Technology, Boston) was awarded 1st Prize in the Student Category and the big winners of the night were Aurea Llorens (Butterworth & Associates) and Richard Oldham (Benevides & Associates) who won 1st Prize in the Professional Category and took home the award for Most Innovative Design for their joint entry. Architecture was in the atmosphere and before the end of the night the only question left to ask was ‘What will next year’s theme be?’

The Trust has received location plans, site plans, elevations, floor plans, cross sections, and scale drawings of distinctive features of the buildings and their surrounds. These plans will serve as a complete record of our built heritage and will have significant value to our management portfolios and to Bermuda’s historic records.
